Laurits Tuxen (b. Copenhagen 1853, d. s.p. 1927)
Study of a female head in the studio of Léon Bonnat. Signed and dated L. T. 78. Oil on panel. 26×34 cm.
Lise Svanholm, A Catalogue Raisonné of the Works of Laurits Tuxen, 1990, no. 130 or 132. The catalogue raisonné mentions two paintings with motifs that correspond to the present one, they have the same size, and they are from the same year.
Laurits Tuxen was in Paris in 1875–76 and again in 1877–78, where he studied twice under Léon Bonnat (1833–1922). At Bonnat's request, Tuxen exhibited at the Paris Salon in 1878, thus proving his skills according to the French standards for academic painting. P.S. Krøyer (1851–1909) did the same the following year, and at this auction we also offer a study of a model drawn by Krøyer from his time at Bonnat's school (see cat. no. 57).
