Johanne Krebs (b. Byrum, Læsø 1848, d. København 1924)

At Rosenborg Castle in Copenhagen. Signed with monogram and dated 1917. Oil on canvas mounted on plate. 82×65 cm.

Provenance: Bruun Rasmussen auction 935, 2009 no. 609.

From 1918 and the following years Johannes Krebs exhibits several paintings with motifs from Rosenborg Castle at the Copenhagen place of exhibition “Den Frie”.

Until the end of the 1880's, the options for women to get an artistic education were few and expensive, as it primarily took place through private lessons. Krebs herself started as a student of the landscape painter P. C. Skovgaard (1817–1875) and later she studied under the Danish landscape painter, Vilhelm Kyhn (1819–1903), who had a private drawing school. After studying in Munich she was admitted to “Tegneskolen for Kvinder” (Drawing School for Women) in 1880.

For many years, “Tegne- og Kunstindustriskolen” (Drawing and Art Industry School) opposed the establishment of a department for women under the Academy of Fine Arts. Through articles Krebs demonstrated the lack of artistic education for women, and after a few years her criticism was supported politically. The year 1888 became a turning point, when the Academy opened for the admission of women as students for the first time - Johanne Krebs was made headmaster and remained so for the next 20 years.

Johanne Krebs made her debut at “Charlottenborg Forårsudstilling” (Charlottenborg's Spring Exhibition) in 1880, where she continued to exhibit 8 times until 1895. From 1891 until her death in 1924 she was, with a few exceptions, represented at “Den Frie Udstilling”, of which she became a co-founder of in 1891 and in 1893 a partner. Krebs also exhibited internationally, and also on the international art scene she fought for the representation of female artists - she made it possible for women to participate in the World Exhibition in Chicago in 1893, for instance.

Krebs was best known for her portraits, but she also painted landscapes and flower paintings.
