“I like Ike” was to become one of the most well-known slogans in the United States in the 1950s. For many Americans the victorious general from World War II represented something familiar and safe, factors which secured Dwight D. Eisenhower (1880–1969) eight years in The White House. It was also during these years that Camp David - the Presidential country retreat in Maryland - got its final name, in honour of the President's grandson David (b. 1948). Prior to this it was known as Shangri-La.
