Poul Henningsen (b. Ordrup 1894, d. Hillerød 1967)
Purchased by Design Museum Danmark in December 2016.
A rare “Free-swinger” easy chair with chromed steel tube frame. Seat, back and headrest upholstered with patinated original blue- and white striped fabric. The reverse side with red fabric. Prototype. A variant was presented at “Købestævnet” in 1932. Made 1932 at V. A. Høffding.
Provenance: A gift from Poul Henningsen to a friend, later inherited.
Literature: “Nyt Tidskrift for Kunstindustri”, January 1932, ill. p. 105.
Poul Henningsen says about the chair: “There is something long-lasting and hygienic about the steel tube chair if it is correctly shaped and upholstered. We have been working with a type of upholstery that will not attact moths and that is easily removed from the steel tubes by the housewife when cleaning. Seen through prudent eyes there is not only a present but also a future for the steel tube furniture. The public is now being presented to the first outcome of the production, but there is a chapter yet to be written”.
