Literature:
Inger Odgaard challenges the boundaries between textile, sculpture, and transformation. Her works are characterized by a sensual immersion in materials and a curious approach to the aesthetics of change. Through years of artistic process, she has developed a unique technique where layers of materials transform both the medium and the expression. Each layer forms a new narrative, with previous traces still visible beneath the processed surfaces – a reflection on the passage of time and the material's inherent memory.
All sculptures are hand-knitted from various textile materials. Once the basic form is finished – also known as the skeleton – Odgaard continues the process by immersing the skeleton in a series of baths with different liquids, where each bath adds volume and texture. The knitting dries and is then dipped again, and again...
Her sculptures create a poetic space where light and shadow become part of the expression of the work. Odgaard has developed her own language of form, as her works are transparent. They have spaces you can look into, but you cannot enter. This directly engages with Odgaard’s artistic exploration of ‘in-between spaces’ – the areas where transformation takes place, and where the artwork opens up to its surroundings.
Nature is a constant source of inspiration for Odgaard, who lives close to the sea and the dramatic chalk cliffs of Møn. Her works reflect the eternal change found in nature – where light, shadows, erosion, and the passage of time constantly alter the visual landscape. This sense of movement and transformation is central to her sculptures, where the layered surfaces bear witness to an artistic process in constant development. Odgaard's works are more than sculptures – they are sensory experiences that balance between the fragile and the permanent, the open and the closed, the soft and the hard. Her art is an exploration of the possibilities of the material, but also a deeper reflection on how time, transformation, and craftsmanship merge in sculptural form
