C. W. Eckersberg, after, 19th century (b. Blåkrog near Aabenraa 1783, d. Copenhagen 1853)

Portrait of Frederik VI (1784–1839) in red uniform jacket standing in his cabinet. Unsigned. Oil on canvas. 79×53 cm. Period frame.

This portrait of Frederik VI in red uniform, originally made by C. W. Eckersberg as a family piece of the entire royal family in 1821, and of which Eckersberg himself later made several repetitions and variations, was one of the most popular depictions of the King at the time and it hung i.a. in town halls across the country. Frederik VI almost always wore a uniform. All his life, Europe was at war, so men in power wore uniforms. The King is always the commander-in-chief of all the country's military forces, and he therefore has a general's uniform for each regiment. This one belongs to the Life Guards on foot, with the characteristic embroidered “bows” on the chest, which were used throughout Frederik VI's time (from 1785).
