Original black-and-white press photograph of the top of Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania (Tanganyika). Circa 1940. Back with agency and restriction stamp, archive stamp, and handwritten note, ‘The Kilimanjaro’. Also remains of a glued-on note (?). Oakwood frame with double glass. Visible size 13×20 cm. Frame size 22×29 cm.

Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa's highest mountain at 5,895 meters, was first climbed on October 6, 1889, by the young Tanzanian Yohanas Kinyala Lauwo (1871–1996), the German geologist Hans Meyer (1858–1929), and Austrian teacher and mountaineer Ludwig Purtscheller (1849–1900).

Condition

This is an original black-and-white silver gelatin press photograph from c. 1940, which shows fine surface scratches and signs of normal handling. Back with discolouration.
