Provenance: Circolo Scandinavo / Skandinavisk Forening i Rom.

In 1877, Peder Severin Krøyer embarked on his first extended journey abroad. He traveled first to France, then Spain, and finally to Italy, where he arrived in Rome just before Christmas in 1879. Most of Krøyer's time in Rome was spent exploring the city's landmarks, but he also enjoyed the camaraderie and festivities with other Scandinavian artists.

The identity of the man in this portrait is unknown, but Krøyer has depicted him wearing a type of hat favored by many Scandinavian artists during their stays in Rome.
