Harald Slott-Møller (b. Copenhagen 1864, d. s.p. 1937)

Portrait of Crown Princess Ingrid (1910–2000) in a blue evening dress and white shawl. Signed and dated Harald Slott-Møller 1936. Oil on canvas. 75×60 cm.

The portrait was painted the year after the Swedish Princess Ingrid married Crown Prince Frederik, later Frederik IX (1899–1972).

The Crown Princess wears parts of the iconic ruby jewelry set that she was given as a wedding gift in 1935. The ruby set, which consists of a tiara, a necklace, a bracelet and a set of earrings, was first worn in 1804 at Napoleon's coronation by Désirée Clary (1777–1860), later Queen Desideria of Sweden and Norway. She was married to Field Marshal Jean-Baptiste Bernadotte (1763–1844), who was elected Crown Prince of Sweden in 1810 and of Norway in 1814 under the name Karl Johan. She left the jewelry set to her daughter-in-law, Josefine of Leuchtenberg (1807–1876). The jewelry set came to Denmark in 1869, when Josefine of Leuchtenberg gave it as a wedding present to her granddaughter Princess Lovisa (1851–1926), married to Frederik VIII (1843–1912). It was subsequently given to Alexandrine of Mecklenburg-Schwerin (1879–1952), married to Christian X (1870–1947), who then gave it to her daughter-in-law, Crown Princess Ingrid. She bequeathed the set to her grandson, the current King Frederik X (1968-) so that he could give it to his future wife. The ruby set thus today belongs to Queen Mary (1972-), who has worn it on several occasions. The jewelry set has great sentimental value for the royal family and Crown Princess Mary wore the set on the last day as Crown Princess and the first day as Queen, when Frederik was proclaimed King at Christiansborg Palace on the 14th of January 2024.
