Otto Reinhold Frenckell, together with his two brothers, took over the Finnish family company, the publishing house and bookshop J.C. Frenckell & Son after the death of his father in the 1840s. Frenckell was preoccupied with the liberal ideas and currents of the time and in 1861 became the first editor-in-chief of Helsingfors Dagblad. It was mainly within the banking world that Frenckell built up his career, and in 1866 he became the director of Finlands Bank. Frenckell had a great artistic streak, and in his younger days sang in the choir in several opera performances, just as he wrote theater reviews in addition to his many articles about economics.
In the present drawing we see an elegantly well-dressed and self-confident young man, not many years after he and his brothers had taken over the family business after the death of their father, when he travelled around Europe and among other places came to Rome.
Mounted on cardboard. The paper has turne slightly yellow. A few minimal discolourations.
