A Renaissance silver pomander, gilt interior, of oval shape, each side cast with a hinged and pierced lid including a religious motif depicting the Virgin Mary with the Jesus Child and John the Baptist, beneath resp. one flatter balm hide and one four-parted deeper balm hide, profiled side with zigzag-pattern, top with eyelet. Presumably the Netherlands. 17th century. Weight 16 g. H. (incl. eyelet and locks) 3 cm. W. 1.8 cm.
The pomander is marked with a small axe. It is a Dutch tax mark used 1853–1927 for elderly silver items, that came back into circulation.
