Purchased by Sorø Kunstmuseum in March 2025.

View from the outskirts of a forest with a woman by the lakeshore. Signed and dated L. I. 1839. Oil on panel. 21×27 cm.

Lucie Ingemann, née Mandix, was a Danish painter who mainly painted floral and religious motifs and executed several altarpieces for Danish churches. As a young woman, she received artistic guidance from the painters C.F. Høyer (1775–1855) and C.A. Lorentzen (1749–1828) and the architect G.F. Hetsch (1788–1864), and she received tuition from the flower painter C.D. Fritzsch (1765–1841). She was also advised on figure drawing and perspective by the painter C.W. Eckersberg (1783–1853). It is assumed that she also sought advice from the history painter J.L. Lund (1777–1867), and that she was inspired by the religious art of the German Nazarenes after a study trip to Berlin and Dresden in 1828. Her paintings often have a religious and mystical content.

In 1822, she married the author and hymn poet B.S. Ingemann (1789–1862), who, unlike many of his contemporaries, supported his wife's artistic enterprise. The couple's home in Sorø was visited by several of the great cultural figures of the time, including the writer and poet Hans Christian Andersen (1805–1875) and the sculptor Bertel Thorvaldsen (1770–1844).

Addition March 23 2025:

The present painting is a copy after C. W. Eckersberg's “Skovparti fra Furesøen (fra Frederiksdal)” (Forest Scene from Lake Furesøen (from Frederiksdal)), which he began in 1831 and completed in 1833 (no. 481 in Emil Hannover's Catalogue Raisonné of the Works of C. W. Eckersberg, 1898). As described above, Lucie Ingemann received advice and guidance in perspective from Eckersberg, and the present work is evidence that she, like many of Eckersberg's students, also copied his works.
