The artists Frederik Christian Lund and Carl Bloch knew each other from their time at The Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen, a relationship that was further strengthened when they met in Italy. Encouraged by his time with Carl Bloch in Rome from 1862 to 1864 and Bloch's success as a history painter, Lund sought to establish himself as a history painter in the following years, although he was unable to infuse his subjects with Bloch's sense of drama. The national-cultural mobilization after 1864 provided Lund with a number of major commissions, including works for Frederiksborg Castle and Viborg Cathedral.
