In the brief mentioning of the artist in Weilbachs Kunstnerleksikon, the specific painting “Interiør fra en Vaskekælder” as well as an influence from Vilhelm Hammershøi (1864–1916) is mentioned (in Danish): “With its subdued palette in grey and brown nuances and the soft light modelling the figures, the painting from the wash house shows the influence of amongst others Vilhelm Hammershøi”.

Around 1895, Emilie Christensen was a student of Charlotte Sode (1859–1931) and Julie Meldahl (1861–1946) at Tegneskolen for Kvinder (The Drawing School for Women). She exhibited at Charlottenborg in 1899, in 1900, again from 1902 to 1904 and at De afvistes Udstilling (The exhibition of the rejected) in 1905. She travelled to Paris in 1896 and to Russia in 1897.
