Provenance: Circolo Scandinavo / Skandinavisk Forening i Rom (inv. No. A 31).

Olof Johan Södermark initially pursued a career in the Swedish military. After several years of service, he began taking on more topographical assignments within the military, including calculating and drawing the blueprints for Karlsborgs Fästning (Karlsborg Fortress) and assisting in its construction. The transition out of the military started between 1820–1824, when he took on smaller, paid tasks such as creating etchings of monuments for magazines and other publications.

In the mid-1820s, Olof Johan Södermark left Sweden in his effort to become an artist. He first traveled to Paris and later to Rome, where he ended up living for longer periods of time until his death in 1848.
