Paul Gadegaard (b. Frederiksberg 1920, d. Copenhagen 1996)

Untitled. Unsigned. Oil on board. 150×200 cm.

Paul Gadegaard was in Paris in the post-war years, where he was taught at André Lhote's private academy, Académie Lhote in 1946 and 1947. In 1949 he joined the artist group Linien II in Denmark whose artistic ambitions he shared and had so much in common with. Gadegaard was one of the best representatives of the social ambitions that were fundamental to the concrete artists of the time. Art should contribute to a new and better world after the devastation of the war and create a sense of clarity and harmony through art's most simple and easy-to-read, but also most powerful tools; clear shapes, pure colors and their correlation. This outlook was defining for the majority of Gadegaard's work. Both in the works in general, where sharp geometric shapes meet a clear and characteristic color juxtaposition, and in the total decoration projects at Den Sorte Fabrik and the Angli factory in Herning, which Gadegaard himself described as social realist works, where art was supposed to create a better working environment. Paul Gadegaard's feeling for creating harmony and clarity between pure colors and shapes is the epitome of “Clear Form” and functionalism, where art tries to meet human needs and positively influence society through aesthetic enrichment of the general living conditions.
