In 1930, the 125th anniversary of Hans Christian Andersen's birth, Johannes Larsen painted 34 oil paintings with scenes from “The Ugly Duckling”. It was a scene that interested Larsen, and he continued working with it.
The present painting is a replica of the work reproduced on page 64 in Erland Porsmose & Susanne Thestrup Truelsen, “Fynbomalerne og H. C. Andersen”.
