Due to financial difficulties, Hans Johan Frederik Berg began his artistic education in 1835 at The National Academy of the Arts in Oslo. However, he had been involved in drawing and painting before enrolling to the Academy, and in his hometown in Northern Norway, he was known for his portraits. Portrait painting was a central part of his artistic practice, and his depictions of individuals, including the Sami people he encountered during his travels through Norway, are an important part of Norwegian cultural heritage, with several now belonging to The National Museum in Oslo.
Hans Johan Frederik Berg became a well-traveled man, making multiple trips to Italy among other places. The present portrait is from his first trip to Italy, where he stayed from 1846–1847.
Mounted on cardboard. The paper has turned slightly yellow. Minor damp discolourations.
