THE COUNTESS' PRESENT
A Rococo Revival 8k gold bangle, richly chiseled with rocailles and foliage, prominent and wide center with a leaf, decorated with white opaque enamel and green translucent enamel, surrounded by twisted tentacles, pearls in rows and two belts with heart-shaped ornamentation, mounted with safety chain. Presumably Denmark. Early 1850s. Weight 35 g. Inner measurements 5.7×5.2 cm.
Provenance: Seller's great-great-grandmother, Countess Karen Knuth, née Rothe (1815–1877), married 1837 to Count Frederik Knuth (1813–1856). He was, of many positions, among others Danish Minister of Foreign Affairs in 1848, member of the House of Commons 1852–1853 and member of the House of Lords 1854–1856. In addition, he was not least one of King Frederik VII of Denmark's 38 royally elected members of the Constituent Assembly, which drafted Denmark's first constitution of 5 June 1849. Count Knuth thus belonged to the close circle around the king and his wife, Countess Danner. This also reinforces the tradition of the Count Knuth couple's descendants that Countess Karen Knuth for a period was lady-in-waiting to Countess Danner, who gave her this bangle.
