Provenance: The estate of former rector of Aarhus University, Carl F. Wandel (1929–2025) and wife Ellinor Wandel (1931–2025).
Carl F. Wandel was the great-grandson of painter Elisabeth Wandel (1850–1926). Elisabeth Wandel married wholesaler and art patron Oscar Andreas Wandel (1845–1925) and became the mother of two sons before embarking on her career as an artist. She was a student of P.S. Krøyer (1851–1909) at Kunstnernes Frie Studieskoler in Copenhagen and was also taught by the painter Carl Thomsen (1847–1912). It wasn't until the age of 38 that she made her debut at Charlottenborgs Forårsudstilling (Spring Exhibition) with a pastel drawing, but already the following year she was represented at the World Exhibition in Paris - also with a pastel drawing. Pastel was her favourite technique at the beginning of her career, but later she also turned to oil painting. She worked with a wide range of subjects; from landscapes, model studies and portraits to garden scenes and interiors. Elisabeth Wandel's son, Sigurd Wandel (1875–1947), who portrays her in this present portrait, became a painter like his mother, and later became a professor at the Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen.
