Michael Ancher (b. Bornholm 1849, d. Skagen 1927)

Rough weather. The lifeboat is put into the water. Signed and dated M.A. 02. Oil on canvas. 54×70 cm.

Exhibited: ARKEN, “Skagensmalerne - i nyt lys”, 2008 no. 37, ill. p. 85.

Provenance: Bruun Rasmusen auction Vejle 107, 2006 no. 9, ill p. 11. The collection of Louis Nielsen (2008).

Throughout his life, Michael Ancher was preoccupied with the life and work of fishermen, which was depicted in realistic depictions of the population and the landscape in and around Skagen. As he got to know the hard everyday life of the local people, his motifs took a more realistic direction. Ancher is probably the Danish painter who has come closest to painting the daily life of fishermen and rescuers.
