Janus la Cour (b. Ringkøbing 1837, d. Odder 1909)

“Fra Pyrenæerne”. From the Pyrenees. Presumably from Arrau. Signed and dated J. la Cour Roma 1866. Oil on canvas. 142×210 cm.

Rikard Magnussen, A Catalogue Raisonné of the Works of Janus la Cour no. 178 (under 1867).

Janus la Cour lived in Italy 1865–1867 and when the painting was finished, he sent it to Copenhagen to be included in the Charlottenborg exhibition 1867.

Exhibited: Charlottenborg 1867 no. 39.

Provenance: His Excellency, Count Sponneck (1867).

Rikard Magnussen: “Landskabsmaleren Janus la Cour 1837–1909”, 1928 p. 78. Here the author mentions the creation of the painting (in Danish): “Among the most important paintings from the first Italian trip is the large mountainscape from the Pyrenees, which he painted in Rome during the winter of 65–66. In addition, he probably had quite a few coloured drawings, but no actual study, so the painting was predominantly based on his memory …” Janus la Cour was not entirely satisfied with this because he had very strict demands concerning adherence to natural truth. Despite the size of the painting and a high price, it immediately found a buyer, none-other than the above-mentioned Count Sponneck, who bought it for 600 Danish rigsdaler
