Olaf Rude (b. Rakvere, Estland 1886, d. Frederiksberg 1957)
Still Life with Fruit, c. 1919–20. Signed Olaf Rude. Oil on canvas. 112×95 cm.
In his still lifes, Rude demonstrates his unparalleled ability to create compositional clarity. The interaction between the fruit, dishes, table and pot plant represents a leaning towards the geometric in the painting, a Nordic interpretation of cubism, the balance of which is underpinned by the finely tuned harmony between palette and surface. The public first became acquainted with the colourful still lifes at Grønningen in 1917. The exhibition was a breakthrough for Rude, and his still lifes from that period have since become coveted highlights of the artist's production.
