Frans Schwartz and P.S. Krøyer were roughly the same age – Schwartz was born in 1850 and Krøyer in 1851. They attended the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen at approximately the same time – Krøyer began in 1864 and graduated in 1870, and Schwartz began in 1866 and graduated in 1872. They became close friends, and the portrait here is from their time as students in 1869. Later they were both involved in Kunstnernes Frie Studieskole (the Independent Art School of Artists), which Schwartz was a co-founder of, and where Krøyer taught. In 1878, they travelled together through Spain.
