Adelsteen Normann (b. Vågøya 1848, d. Oslo 1918)

Provenance: Has been in the same Danish private collection since approx. 1900.

Eilert Adelsteen Normann was born in Vågøya in Norway, but moved to Düsseldorf, where he received his artistic education at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf under the artist Eugen Dücker (1841–1916). In 1887, he moved to Berlin, where he lived the rest of his life, but he spent his summers in Balestrand in Norway. Although Adelsteen Normann lived and studied in Germany, he focused in his art on the magnificent Norwegian nature, and he became especially known for his coastal and fiord landscapes from northern and western Norway.

Adelsteen Normann gained international recognition during his lifetime and exhibited in Oslo, London, Berlin, Vienna, Düsseldorf, Munich and Paris. He is today represented in museums such as the Northern Norwegian Art Museum, the National Museum in Oslo, the Kulturhistorisches Museum Rostock, the Leeds Art Gallery and the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.
