Peter Julius Larsen (b. Copenhagen 1818, d. Rome 1852)
“Sjellandsk Bondebryllup (Hjemkomsten fra Kirken)”. A Zealandic peasant wedding. The return from church. Signed and dated P. Larsen 1851. Oil on canvas. 71×95 cm.
Exhibited: Charlottenborg 1851 no. 136.
Literature: “Kunst i Privateje”, vol. III, 1945, ill. and mentioned p. 255. Here, Jørgen B. Hartmann writes (in Danish): “The first painting you notice is P. J. Larsens Zealandic peasant wedding, which depicts the bride and groom returning from church (exhibited in 1851, depicted in ”Illstreret dansk Konversations-Leksikon IV, p. 218). It is a true genre from the time of our grandparents, when Exner, Dalsgaard and Vermehren captured the picturesque costumes and customs of our country on canvas. Peter Julius Larsen was born in Copenhagen in 1818 and died in Rome in 1852 of chest disease. Although diligent, he was not particularly productive; his works left behind are soon numbered; rural scenes with the motley local colours of the costumes satisfied the painter's desire for storytelling. The painting was acquired by Councillor of justice A. F. Toft and passed on to the County governor's mother".
Provenance: Bought by Kunstforeningen (The Art Association) in 1851 and was disposed of by lottery at Kunstforeningen in 1852, here won by Headmaster K.P. Nielsen, Aarhus. Councillor of justice A. F. Toft. County governor Gustav Toft, Næstved (1945).
A lithograph by Adolph Kittendorff (1820–1902) from 1861 was made after the present painting.
