Paul Fischer (b. Copenhagen 1860, d. Gentofte 1934)

At the market in Naples. Signed and dated Paul Fischer Vomereo Napoli 1922. Oil on canvas. 72×100 cm.

Vomero is a district in Naples.

This depiction of public life was made during Fischer's second trip to Italy in 1922. Fischer had previously been to Italy as well as Nice and Paris in 1894–95. As in his Copenhagen paintings, it is the colourful street life that has captured the painter's eye, and the market day on the streets of the Vomero neighbourhood does not differ much from the activities at Højbroplads and Gammel Strand in Copenhagen. The cheerful cigar-smoking street urchins, the young pretty girl with her groceries and the many goods with merchants and customers flocking around are all there. Yet the often slightly dreary Copenhagen haze has here been replaced with a more enchanting Italian late summer sunshine, which especially shines through on the left side of the painting.
