Peter Raadsig stayed in Rome in the period 1841–1845. Here, he especially painted folk life, as here in the present painting, where he shows an intimate scene with two Italian women who are concentrated on spinning yarn; but also the town and the surrounding landscape, see Lot. No. 837. Subiaco is a picturesque mountain town located east of Rome.
