Like several other Danish composers, Niels Ravnkilde traveled to Rome in 1853. There, he joined the Danish colony of artists, and following his great commitment, he served as chairman of Skandinavisk Forening from 1876 and several years on. As chairman of the association, Ravnkilde came into personal contact with most of the Danish artists in Rome, and it is likely in this context that he met Frederik Christian Lund, who was in Rome from 1862 to 1864. Ravnkilde helped many Danish artists who traveled to Italy on study and educational trips, and in recognition of his efforts for the Danish artists in Rome, he was appointed professor when he returned to Copenhagen.
Portraits of Niels Ravnkilde has been executed by several artists in the collection of Skandinavisk Forening – see, for example, the painter Ludovica Thornam's portrait of him with lot no. 2425/7536.
