Jørgen Dahl (b. Vallensbæk 1825, d. København 1890)

“Barkskibet “Faders Minde“ af Nyborg”. (The bark Fathers Memory of Nyborg). Signed J. Dahl. Gouache, pencil, drawing ink and varnish on paper laid on cardboard. 43.5×70 cm.

Jørgen Dahl was a captain and a painter of ships. In 1876 he established himself as a painter of seascapes in Copenhagen. In several of his early works from the beginnning of the 1870'es this signature is often placed on a piece of drift wood or a floating barrel. This particular detail is visible in the present gouache which is also varnished - a method sometimes used by Dahl in his watercolours.
