The Norwegian painter Wilhelm Otto Peters first received private education before he admitted to The Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Stockholm in 1871. After completing his studies, Peters embarked on a study trip, first to Rome from 1873 to 1876, and subsequently to Munich and Paris, before he returned to Stockholm in 1880.

A year later, in 1881, Peters traveled to Skagen, and inspired by French naturalism, he contributed to the breakthrough of modernism in Nordic painting alongside the Skagen painters, with whom he became quite close. Wilhelm Peters was one of the first to begin painting fishermen at Brøndums Hotel in Skagen — a favored subject that also captivated the Danish Skagen painters Michael Ancher (1849–1927) and Peder Severin Krøyer (1851–1909).
