Clara Carl (b. København 1859, d. s.p. 1939)
“Vilde Blomster”. Wild Flowers. Still life with a bouquet of wild flowers in a vase. Signed and dated Clara Carl 95. Oil on canvas. 61×43 cm.
Clara Carl's production is relatively sparse and we rarely see her at auction.
She studied the landscape and still life genre where paintings the flowers were the dominant element. Carl made her debut at Charlottenborg in 1889. She was then admitted to the art academy where she was taught by Vilhelm Kyhn (1819–1903), Bertha Wegmann (1846–1926) and Julius Paulsen (1860–1940) among others. In 1889 she travelled to Paris and Belgium and lastly the Netherlands in 1893. She exhibited at Charlottenborg with occasional interruptions each year form 1899 to 1910 and at Kvindernes Udstilling i København in 1895.
At this auction we offer one of her works with wild flowers - here in an arrangement in a careless bouquet with dandelions among other things. The dandelion in particular - the hardy wild flower that cannot be kept down - appears frequently in flower painting by female artists and is also symbolically used by Susette Catrine Holten (1863–1937) in the graphic promomtion of Kvindernes Udstilling i København in 1895.
In particular, the inspiration from Carl's former teacher Bertha Wegmann's wild field bouquets shines though in the work at this auction.
Exhibited: Charlottenborg 1896 no. 63.
