Fritz Petzholdt (b. Copenhagen 1805, d. Patras 1838)

“Bjergvej ved Olevano”. Mountain road at Olevano. Unsigned. Inscribed on the back of the canvas: “F. Petzholdt” and “tilhører (belonging to) G. Collin”. Oil on paper laid on canvas. 20×28.5 cm.

Exhibited: Kunstforeningen, “De ukendte guldaldermalere”, 1982 no. 135.

Kunstforeningen “Fritz Petzholdt. 1805–1838”, 1985 no. 74.

Provenance: Judge G. Collin was Petzholdt's brother-in-law, and it is his handwriting on the back of the canvas. G. Collin wrote on the back when he framed Petzholdt's paintings. The collection of Johan Hansen, Consul General no. 1505, not his auctions.

Fritz Petzholdt was a student of Eckersberg and he was the only one who chose landscape painting as his main subject. He was inspired by foreign landscape painters. The Italian countryside were among his favorite motifs. Petzholdt uses a more free and wide brushstroke in his late paintings, unlike the early ones, where the details were more minutely painted. Petzholdt was only 33 years old when he died and left only a small production of paintings.
