Vilhelm Arnesen (b. Flensburg 1865, d. Copenhagen 1948)
Purchased by “Det Nationalhistoriske Museum på Frederiksborg Slot” in November 2013.
Prince Carl and Princess Maud of Denmark leaving Copenhagen heading for Oslo on board the Danish Royal Yacht Dannebrog as King Haakon VII and Queen Maud of Norway. Signed and dated Vilh. Arnesen 1905. Oil on canvas. 42×68 cm.
When Norway seceded from Sweden in 1905, Prince Carl (1872–1957) and Princess Maud (1869–1938) of Denmark were elected King and Queen of the new independent kingdom of Norway.
The couple were both grandchildren of King Christian IX, who received the Norwegian deputation, who asked for permission to appoint the young couple to be King and Queen of Norway. They then sailed to Oslo on the Danish Royal Yacht Dannebrog, which is shown on this painting, along with a convoy of warships and other vessels with flags.
Vilhelm Arnesen repeated the motif at least once, and a similar painting is owned by the Norwegian Royal Family. Furthermore, two of Vilhelm Arnesen's paintings showing the arrival of the Royal couple to Norway, were also sold at ABR auction 836, 2008 no. 600 for 34,000 DKK and ABR auction 841, 2013 no. 136 for 44,000 DKK.
Please note: The item is subject to the Anti-Money Laundering Act. In the event of a hammer price of DKK 50,000 or more, including buyer’s premium, the buyer must submit a copy of a valid photo ID and proof of address in order to collect the item.
