'The Ra Expeditions' were two expeditions undertaken in 1969–70 by Norwegian explorer, archaeologist and author Thor Heyerdahl (1914–2002). The expeditions aimed to show that Egyptian/Phoenician papyrus vessels could have reached America in ancient times. The first expedition failed when the vessel, 'Ra' (named after the Egyptian sun god), fell apart after eight weeks at sea. By this time it had traveled 5,000 km. The second expedition, 'Ra II', set sail on May 17, 1970 from Safi in Morocco and - after 57 days at sea - reached Barbados on July 12. Thor Heyerdahl had thus proved his theory.
