Axel Salto (b. Copenhagen 1889, d. Frederiksberg 1961)

Stoneware vase modelled in budded style. Decorated with Solfatara glaze. Signed Salto, 20665. Royal Copenhagen. Made 1950. Designed 1944. H. 25,5 cm. Diam. max. 19,5 cm.

Provenance: Danish private collection.

The Solfatara glaze is most distinct when used on objects requiring modelling or relief patterns. Therefore, the Solfatara glaze was ideal for Salto's design, and he himself believed that the Solfatara and Sung glaze contributed to the most fascinating and touching achievements in his stoneware production. The glaze is a result of the collaboration between H.A.L. Madslund and Nils Thorsson in 1936. Salto was – like other ceramic artists at Royal Copenhagen – a true believer of the Solfatara glaze's distinct acid green colour. Around 1958 the Solfatara glaze was phased out. At this point Salto was one of the only ceramic artists left at Royal Copenhagen to even use the Solfatara glaze.
