Robert Storm Petersen (b. Valby 1882, d. Frederiksberg 1949)

Street life in a park. Signed R. Storm P. Paris 06. Watercolour on paper. Visible size 44×58 cm.

In 1906 Robert Storm Petersen travelled to Paris for the first time. Here he created a number of paintings partly influenced by the curved lines of Art Nouveau, partly by the expressionist way of painting – in particular Edvard Munch’s existentially oriented imagery. Among the other role models influencing Storm P.’s early work are the loner James Ensor (1860–1949) and Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec’s (1864–1901) depictions of Parisian street and café life. In the first part of his career Storm P. engaged himself completely in Modernism’s revolt against the academic, naturalistic art. He did so, for instance, through the group “De Tretten” (“The Thirteen”, which included names such as Olaf Rude and Jais Nielsen), and his short association with the circle around the German expressionist magazine “Der Sturm”. From the beginning of the 1920s he left the modern arts outer bastions to dedicate himself to the comic drawings, which would make him one of Denmark’s most beloved cartoonists and humourists.
