2449/192

An original b/w silver gelatin press photograph of Winston Churchill during his first BBC radio broadcast to the British public on October 1, 1939. Back with agency stamp, newspaper paragraph, handwritten note in green as well as stamped publication date (April 6, 1955). Development from 1955. Red painted wooden frame; double glazing. Visible size 20×16 cm. Frame size 29×25 cm.

It may seem ironic today that Winston Churchill, who always had a strained relationship with the British press in general and the BBC in particular, achieved immortality in the years 1939–1945 precisely through the modern mass media, especially radio, which at that time (BBC) had been around for less than 20 years, since 1922. When Churchill gave his first radio address to the nation on October 1, 1939, exactly one month after the outbreak of the Second World War, he was not yet Prime Minister, but First Lord of the Admiralty.

Photograph with the same motif, but in larger format, sold at Bruun Rasmussen auction 2432, lot 57.
