Kristian Zahrtmann (b. Rønne 1843, d. Copenhagen 1917)

“En Byge. En ung Mand, set fra højre Side, sidder paa en Stentrappe imellem et Par Søjler og røger sin Shagpibe. Ved Siden af ham en Rejseflaske med Vin; bag ham en opslaaet Paraplui. Udenfor Søjlerne en Havegang, der driver af Væde. Tilhøjre i Billedet mod Baggrunden en Balustrade og vid Udsigt over det blaa Hav. Corfu”. A rain shower. A young man, seen from the right, sits on a stone staircase between a pair of columns and smokes his shag pipe. Beside him a travel bottle of wine; behind him an open umbrella. Outside the columns a garden path, full of rain. To the right of the picture against the background a balustrade and a wide view of the blue sea. Corfu. Signed with monogram and dated 1889. Oil on canvas. 45×60 cm.

Provenance: Hunting master of the court C.C.S. Count Danneskiold-Samsøe (1907). His widow, and the cousin of Zahrtmann, Countess Wanda Danneskiold-Samsøe née Zahrtmann. Their son Ove Count Danneskiold-Samsøe (1917). Winkel & Magnussen auction 76, 1930 no. 214, here sold as “Udsigt fra Kong Georgs Slot paa Corfu” (View from King George's Castle on Corfu).

In the winter of 1888–89, Zahrtmann stayed in Greece, including a few months on Corfu, together with his cousin Wanda Danneskiold-Samsøe's second-oldest son Ove Danneskiold-Samsøe. During the stay, he painted nine paintings, including the present one, for which Ove sat as a model.
