Exhibited: Charlottenborg, Den Nordiske Kunstudstilling i København (The Nordic Art Exhibition in Copenhagen), 1883 no. 362.
Literature: Anne Christiansen, “Brendekilde. Liv og værk”, 2021, mentioned pp. 60–61. On page 61, a photogravure of the artist's drawing of his painting is illustrated. Christiansen writes about the painting (in Danish): “Brendekilde himself provided a drawing of his painting Farewell to the catalogue of the Nordic Art Exhibition. Here, for the first time, he depicts one of his favorite scenes with a couple saying goodbye.” (p. 60). “The scene is set in Brændekilde with the church and the grandparents' house in the background, while the artist used his mother and a few other villagers as models for the realistic depiction of a young woman saying goodbye to a young man, while her mother stands by as a chaperone. Similar episodes later appeared on Brendekilde's canvases. Break ups and farewells preoccupied many at the end of the 19th century, when Industrialism really took hold in Denmark. At that time, many young people left the countryside and went to the market towns to get an education or to look for work, while others took the big leap and emigrated to America. A farewell thus meant that it could be a long time before those who said goodbye saw each other again, if ever.” (p. 61).
