A Southern European Baroque facet-cut rock crystal medicine locket, of octagonal shape, reeled 18k gold frame with black opaque enamel, one hinged side and one lock side, interior carved with five circular indentations, top with suspension ring and eyelet. Italia or Spain, 17th century. H. in total 5.5 cm. W. 3.5 cm. D. 2 cm.
The indentations were used for storing 'shrimp stones', meaning natural secretions from crustaceans, taken as medicine to treat stomach and eye ailments. Their medicinal qualities were discovered in the Middle Ages and continued to be sold in pharmacies until as recently as the 19th century.
Provenance: The Danish owner inherited it from her grandfather, who was born in Austria and an antique dealer.
