The twin brothers Gustaf Bernhard and Carl Emil Östermann were both passionate about drawing and painting from an early age. They both studied at The Royal Insitute of Art in Stockholm, though a few years apart. During his time at the Academy, Gustaf Bernhard was particularly interested in history painting, but like his brother, he eventually focused on portrait painting. Both brothers were highlighted for their skills during their time at the Academy, and they both became renowned portrait painters in Sweden, where their portraits can be seen in various Swedish museums.
