“I get 500 Danish kroner for a painting that my male colleague would receive 1,000 Danish kroner for. Why? Because I am a woman, and for some reason people who buy paintings put more stock in a man.”
The quote is from the artist Ebba Carstensen to the magazine Social-Demokraten in 1943. The quote is an example of Carstensen's awareness of inequality in the art industry, which is why she works throughout her life to improve the working conditions for women. Carstensen is a co-founder and board member of the organization Kvindelige Kunstneres Samfund (Society of Female Artists), which looks after the interests of artists and works actively to improve the conditions of women. In addition, Carstensen is also a member of the Croquis School, which gives women the opportunity to paint live models, which was not previously possible at the academy.
In addition to the above-mentioned work on creating equality in the art industry, Carstensen's artistic work is also impressive. She found some of her motifs in the area around Horneby in the Northern part of Zealand, where her colleague, the painter and weaver Astrid Holm, bought a house in 1926. She often paints forest scenes, like the work here, executed in modernist – almost cubist – simplicity. The palette is simple but powerful and kept in shades of green with individual brown and yellow fields. However, you still get the feeling of being below the forest's dense canopy of leaves; in a cathedral of sorts, where the light only breaks through in a few places.
Carstensen receives a diverse education in Denmark and in Paris and also studies at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts. She becomes the first female member of the Decemberists and is also part of the Academic Council. Carstensen is represented at a number of art museums such as the National Gallery of Denmark, ARoS, Skive Art Museum, Vejle Art Museum, Esbjerg Art Museum and more. She receives the Eckersberg Medal and the Thorvaldsen Medal.
