Fritz Syberg (b. Faaborg 1862, d. Kerteminde 1939)
“Slangehoved og Katost”. Viper's bugloss and Mallow. Signed with monogram and dated 1906. Oil on canvas. 46×56 cm.
Exhibited: Den frie Udstilling 1907 no. 212.
The motif probably originates from Fyns Hoved (Funen's Head), where Fritz Syberg and his family spent their summers in the early 1900s. The rugged and scenic area attracted Syberg, and he was captivated by the untouched nature. The family returned year after year to live close to nature. Here, they lived in small huts right on the beach and lived a primitive life of fishing and growing their own vegetables.
