Johan Neumann (b. Copenhagen 1860, d. s.p. 1940)

The battle took place on 9 May 1864 between a Danish naval force consisting of the frigates “Niels Juel” and “Jylland” as well as the corvette “Heimdal” under the leadership of Commodore Suenson, and on the other side the Austro-Prussian naval force consisting of the frigates “Schwartzenberg” and “Radetzky” as well as the gunboats “Prussian Adler”, “Blitz” and “Basilisk” under the command of Commodore W. von Tegett-hoff. When the “Schwartzenberg” was set ablaze due to gunfire, the Austrian naval fleet sought refuge at Helgoland.
