Johannes Larsen (b. Kerteminde 1867, d. s.p. 1961)

Purchased by “Johannes Larsen Museet” in November 2013.

“Damer ved brinken”. Two girls looking over the sea. The painter's fiancé Alhed (1872–1927) and his sister Christine (1876–1960), who later married the painter Sigurd Swane. 1897. Signed with monogram. Oil on canvas. 71×95 cm.

Three pencil drawings, studies for the painting, are included. All dated 1896. 22×28 cm.

Coastal scene. A steep slope near Erikshåb, Alhed's childhood home, Sandholdt Lyndelse, Fyn.

Alhed, Johannes Larsen's fiancé, and his sister Christine.

Four girls on a cliff. (4).

Exhibited: Skagen Museum, “Harmoni i blåt”, 2001 no. 38, reproduced p. 31.

Johannes Larsen has changed the location in the painting to the cliff at Lundsgaard near Kerteminde. Alhed and Johannes were married in 1898.

Women and absorption in nature are the subject of this painting. The two young women in their white dresses seem spellbound by looking at the sea. The painter's romantic passion for and glorification of the woman, he is going to marry, is evident in this painting.

Both Alhed and Christine became painters.

Provenance: Johannes Larsen's descendants.
