Nelson Mandela is globally regarded as an icon of democracy and social justice and received more than 250 honors during his lifetime, including the Nobel Peace Prize (1993; with Frederik Willem de Klerk). He is deeply respected not least in South Africa, where he is often referred to by his Thembu clan name, Madiba, and described as the ‘Father of the Nation’.
