In the mid 1950s the present owner’s father was in charge of purchasing furniture and art for Danish embassies abroad. He met many times with Peder Moos during this period and also purchased pieces for himself made by Moos. In the early 1960s after the present owner’s parents built a new house in Denmark, his mother suggested to her husband, that they should acquire a wall-mounted medicine cabinet for their private bathroom. Knowing her husband very well, she stressed that it should be “just a very ordinary metal cabinet”. But, not surprisingly, the present owner’s father, who always sought the best of the best, contacted Peder Moos and commissioned a medicine cabinet to be designed, with complete artistic freedom. Almost a year later, Moos wrote a letter, to let them know that the cabinet was finished and that he would be pleased to meet and install the cabinet himself. The family had no idea what the cabinet would look like, nor any knowledge of any details. Moos always traveled by train and so did the cabinet, which was sent off from his village in Jutland. When the day of the meeting arrived, Moos was present when the family unpacked the cabinet. The surprise and joy of seeing this little gem for the first time was overwhelming. However, even more astonishing was the reaction when Moos revealed the high price – 5,000 DKK. “I hope the price does not kill you” he wrote in one of the two letters included in this sale. After receiving payment, Moos sent another letter expressing his joy in making the cabinet and that “it will be nice to think about it and know that it is in good hands”. He also included a small gift - the small pencil included in this sale - with the inscription: “but this is a gift, 29. August 1963".
