Per Kirkeby (b. Copenhagen 1938, d. s.p. 2018)

Untitled, 2009. Signed and dated on the reverse. Oil on canvas. 70×65 cm.

Provenance: Galleri Bo Bjerggaard, Copenhagen.

Lars Morell: The motif is a classic in Per Kirkeby's art - Golgata with wedges hammered into the ground at the foot of the cross, which is transformed into a stump or a small rock. Since his pop art in the 1960s, Kirkeby has had a weakness for using elements of the sentimental kitsch art. It is the colour scheme that makes this painting special. The method of painting is carefree and the colours are promiscuous – in the background is an orange sunset, which is provided a suitable counterpoint in the green foreground. Finally, the yellow lines on the wedges and the blue glow above elevates the image beyond the clichés and creates a modern icon painting. This picture does not make a big thing out of itself – it is simply a restrained and modest expression of concentration.
