The twin brothers Gustaf Bernhard and Carl Emil Östermann were both fascinated by drawing and painting from an early age. In 1890, the two brothers traveled to Stockholm, where Carl Emil was to begin his studies at The Royal Instistute of Art. Gustaf Bernhard accompanied him and started at the Technical School with the aim of preparing for the Academy, which he subsequently enrolled in two years later in 1892. Both brothers were recognized for their talents during their time at the Academy, and both were awarded travel grants, which funded their study trip across Europe and to Italy, where they traveled together for part of the journey.

Their artistic development shares many similarities, including both choosing to specialize in portrait painting. They also exhibited together in Stockholm in 1903 and frequently collaborated in their artistic endeavors – both as models and as artistic sounding boards.

There are several portraits of each of them individually, but there are also several double portraits of the two brothers. Gustaf Bernhard, for example, created a joint portrait titled ”Min Bror och jag” (My Brother and I) (1904), which depicts Carl Emil sitting with a brush and palette while Gustaf Bernhard stands behind him, both in the process of evaluating an unfinished work. This mentioned painting can be seen at the Sörmland Museum (Inv. No. SLM 7025).
